Chapter 7

Chapter Summary:  The voices and sounds of nature echo across the land as the wolves stalk caribou. A pike swallows a shrew. This is life and death during an arctic night.

Discussion Questions:

What role do the sounds, the calling and voices, the splashing and thrashing, play in this chapter?

Points to Consider:

  • This chapter uses sound to create tension and action in the darkness. Predators and prey alike hear and are heard.

Discuss why some readers might not like the chapters told from the animals' point of view.

Points to Consider:

  • Some readers might appreciate the narrative shift from Cutuk's voice to the omniscient narrator.
  • People might question whether animals can think and feel the same way humans do.
