Chapter 18
Chapter Summary:
A pregnant female wolf flees a persistent hunter. He wounds her and then runs her over but she manages to escape, wounded.

Discussion Questions:

How do the female wolf's resilience and intelligence differ with the previous chapter's "ordinary wolves?"

Points to Consider:

  • This wolf knows how to zigzag and avoid bullets. She's survived other hunts and carries that knowledge with her. The ordinary wolves have been killed, but she survives.

What might Kantner be revealing about wolf hunting by snowmachine?

Points to Consider:

  • He has stripped any romantic notions of what it takes to bring down a wolf. The chase is brutal and bloody, the hunter relentless and careless. The hunter's poor shooting and almost maniacal machine riding do not illustrate a friendly portrait of wolf killing.
