Barbara Jordan was an African-American who wanted to make things
better for all African-American citizens by making laws. She became an
elected official. Barbara Jordan spoke for African-Americans for many
years. She was the first African-American woman to be elected into the
Senate and Congress from the South. She has never had any trouble
getting people's attention with her deep, clear voice. She is easy for
people to listen to and understand. That's why she's considered one of
the greatest black speakers. As an African-American in Congress, she
was able to make laws and promote legislation that helped Black
Americans have equal rights.
