Chapter 25

Chapter Summary:  A pack of wolves battles with a moose and finally succeeds in taking her down. They feast until they are nearly too full to move. A hunter races towards them, killing three of them.  The hunter's snowmachine dies and the surviving wolves flee into the woods.

Discussion Questions:

Why do you think Kantner chose the juxtaposition of the successful moose kill with that of the human hunter and his moose kill?

Points to Consider:

  • The wolf kill isn't instantaneous or glamorous, and neither is the human's hunt of the wolves, but both scenes illustrate "tired" hunters and the desperation of the hunted.
