UAF-1994-70-8 The oil-burning sternwheeler Susie transported passengers along the Yukon River between St. Michael and Dawson City. In 1910, photographer Lawyer Rivenburg noted on the back of this image: “This view was taken at Eagle, the first town on the Yukon in Alaska. A U.S. Customs officer is stationed here, also Ft. Egbert, an army post. This boat set us ashore at midnight across the river from our destination. The river was a mile wide and no one expecting us. After I had kindled a fire on the beach, one of the traders came for us with a canoe and we did not have to spend the night in the open.” Archives, University of Alaska Fairbanks.
