William “Billy” Mitchell was a U.S. Army lieutenant when he first
arrived in Alaska, charged to investigate the route for a telegraph line
linking Valdez with Fort Egbert. He also oversaw construction of the
line into the Interior, which would become known as the Washington-Alaska
Military Cable and Telegraph System or WAMCATS. Further efforts linked
Fort Egbert with other forts along the Yukon River, reaching to St.
