AMRC-b81-19-9 William “Billy” Mitchell was a U.S. Army lieutenant when he first arrived in Alaska, charged to investigate the route for a telegraph line linking Valdez with Fort Egbert. He also oversaw construction of the line into the Interior, which would become known as the Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System or WAMCATS. Further efforts linked Fort Egbert with other forts along the Yukon River, reaching to St. Michael. Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Library and Archives.
