Scheduling transportation for Alaska tourists was difficult. Prior to World War II, the tourism season could only run from mid-June to mid-August, when the rivers melted and mountain passes were no longer covered in snow. Investors did not want to build large hotels that would sit unused for nine months of the year. Consequently, before the Alaska Railroad Hotel was built in 1939, the only tourist accommodations could be found at the Savage River Tent Camp. In 1925, when the Mt. McKinley Tourist & Transportation Company acquired the camp, tourists were transported to the Savage River Tent Camp by stagecoach instead of packhorses. Alaska State Library.
