Pres. Harding's Valdez touring car, McCarthy, 1953

UAA-hmc-0461-series15-1-4

Three cars are lined up outside a house in the ghost town of McCarthy. Wilma Knox is examining the third car, a jeep. The middle car was President Harding's Valdez touring car. Caption: "The car in the cnter [center] is the old Dodge torring [touring] car which I mentioned earlier in my letter---the one in which Pres. Harding rode when he visited Valdez. It still runs very well---and it made Bob and Me think of our old jeep which won't run even though its only a year old! The house behind the cars is where we ate our meals while in McCarthy and is one of the original homes in that town." In 1953, Cordova Airlines started a regular series of aerial tours from Anchorage to the old mining town of Kennicott and the nearby ghost town of McCarthy. This photo is from the first tour. Original photograph size: 4" X 5".
