A man in a helmet and diving suit prepares to descend to the wreck

ASL-P87-1718
On the morning of October 26, rescue boats were able to reach the Princess Sophia; however, the ship had already gone down. A man in a helmet and diving suit prepares to descend to the wreck. All 353 people on board suffocated from the bunker oil that had pooled on the ocean’s surface. The only survivor was an English setter found covered in oil at Tee Harbor, 20 miles south of the shipwreck. The sinking of the Princess Sophia was labeled the worst maritime disaster in the Pacific Northwest. Alaska State Library
