| 1955-1956 Alaska’s Constitution written and approved. Preamble and Article I: Declaration of Rights. In 1949 the Alaska statehood committee was established and preparation for the drafting of the state constitution began. On November 8 1955, fifty five elected delegates from all over the state met in the Constitution Hall at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. The session which was led by territorial senator and first state Governor William Egan, consisted of forty nine men and six women and took seventy five days to conclude. The document was adopted on February 3, 1956, ratified on April 24, 1956 and became effective after the signing of the Alaska Statehood Act on January 3, 1959. UAF-2004-25-4-1 |
