Umiak on whale patrol with a crew of about 10 men looking for bowhead whales. Photo notes state: "Six or eight canoes patrol Bering Straits looking for whale during the nightless days of May while as many more camp on the shore ice, eat, sleep, and perhaps dream of a whale." The images in this collection from Cape Prince of Wales dated from about 1905 and were collected by Mrs. S. R. Bernardi, a schoolteacher at the village of Wales.
