ASL-P320-23 Titled "Drum dance," this image in the Alaska State Library's collection of Barrow images from Rev. Samuel Spriggs dates from 1899-1908. Four well-dressed women dance outside, with babies on their backs, on a blanket made of bearded sealskin during Nalukataq. The metal bucket near drummers is filled with water used to keep drums moist for better sound. The man seated under the right end of the umiak, seen between two dancers on the left, is wearing wooden snow goggles. Mukluks were replaced yearly and unique to each community.
