Empty
By Rebecca Mahar
Genre: Poetry Level: Junior 7-9
Year: 2005 Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

A breeze in an empty house
Stirring curtains and memories
Curtains and memories.
A small dust devil
Springs up from the floor,
Springs up from the floor
Bringing sneezes and memories
Sneezes and memories.
A breeze in an empty house
Rattles windows gently
Gently, gently, gently
Shaking down dust and memories
Dust and memories.
A breeze in an empty house,
An empty house,
An empty house.
Empty
Empty
Empty.
But for a chair.
A rocking chair.
A breeze in an empty house
Rocks an old wood chair;
An old wood chair, missing
The feet that rocked it.
An old wood chair,
A treasure of generations past
Now abandoned
In an empty house.
Empty
Empty
Empty.
A breeze in an empty house
Dries the tears
On the cheeks of the one
Who made the curtains
Who swept the dust devil
Who cleaned the windows
Who kissed the one
Who built the rocking chair
Who left the house
Empty.
