Bad Day?
By Teddy Fernau
Genre: Fiction Level: Elementary 4-6

"Wake up, we're late," Mom said.

"I'm awake," I said half asleep.

"Well, your breakfast is on the table, so hurry up," she said.

"Fine," I answered as she closed the door to my room. As I sat up in bed, I looked at my clock and saw that it was 7:45 in the morning. I thought this was going to be a smooth day for a change, but the electricity had gone out and Mom's alarm didn't go off. I needed to be at school in fifteen minutes. I jumped off my two-mattress bed, and I heard a big crunch and felt a jolt of pain in my foot. I had stepped on my Lego creation that had taken me three days to make. "Ooow, that was my favorite Lego masterpiece," I yelled.

"Aaaaw man," I said.

"Hun, what is it?" my mom yelled back.-

"Oh-uh it's nothing, I just stepped on my Lego thing," I yelled back.

"Oh, didn't that take you a long time to build, Honey?" she yelled.

Again I answered, "Uuuummm sort of."

As I started down the stairs, I heard my mom shout, Hurry up."

"I am," I yelled back. I made my way down the stairs and into the living room which leads into the dining room where the breakfast table is. I saw the cereal that was set out for me on the table and went into the kitchen to get the carton of milk. When I came back with the milk, I found my dog, Snickers, with her front paws on the table eating out of my cereal bowl. "SNICKERS, DOWN!" I yelled, and she ran away into the living room. I turned and went back into the kitchen for a clean bowl for my cereal. I poured some more cereal and milk into the clean bowl and scarfed it down as fast as I could. It felt good going down my throat, and I like the kind of cereal that my mom bought.

I finished eating my breakfast and rushed upstairs to brush my teeth. As I was going into the bathroom, Snickers came around the corner and jumped up on me, knocking me into the bathroom cabinet, which knocked my toothbrush out of my hand and into the toilet. I stared into the toilet, and I couldn't believe my luck. I am not going to stick my hand into that water to get my toothbrush, I thought. What if I try to flush it down, no one will ever know. As I pulled down the flush lever, I realized that this wasn't going to work. The toothbrush went around, and around, and around, but it didn't go down the pipe because the toothbrush was too long. Oh never mind, I'll brush them tomorrow.

I hurried down the stairs and put on my shoes and coat and told my mom, "I'll be in the car, OK?"

"OK," she said back.

As I opened the door to go outside, I forgot that there was a rope tied up for Snickers. I accidentally tripped on the rope and fell flat on my face onto the wood deck. I got up heavily and started to stroll over to the four steps that led to the driveway where the car was parked. Holding my nose, I got into our dark blue Ford Explorer to wait for my mom to come. I saw my mom coming, so I got comfortable for the one-minute drive ahead. As my mom got in and tried to start the car, we heard a loud pop and saw smoke coming from under the hood. Mom tried the car again and the engine rumbled, but the car turned on and the seat belt light started to blink and make a beeping noise.

Mom asked, "Are you ready?"

"Yup," I said back as she pulled out of the concrete driveway and sped down the street.

"Mom?" I asked.

"What?" she snapped.

"Do you love me?" I asked.

"Of course I do," she replied.

"Then why are you going faster than the speed limit?" I said back.

"Because I need to get to work. I'm late, OK honey?" she replied through clenched teeth.

"OK, Mom," I said back.

We drove in silence the rest of the way to school. As we pulled next to the sidewalk, Mom broke the silence and said, "Have fun at school, OK, honey?"

"OK, Mom," I said with a big grin on my face. I sprinted through the crosswalk to the other side of the street that the school was on. I rushed through the school door and looked over to the office (which was deserted) and walked fast to my classroom door. That's when I realized that I had left my backpack at home. Oh well, I thought as I stopped in front of the class. Just then the whole class started laughing and pointing at me, even my teacher. So I looked down and I found out that I had worn my pajamas to school. "Oh no," I cried. Everything started to go fuzzy and white. My teacher and classmates became black blurs in the white mist.

"Wake up, we're late," Mom said.

"I'm awake," I said half asleep.

"Well, your breakfast is on the table, so hurry up," she said.

"Fine, " I said as she closed the door to my room.

As I sat up in bed, I looked at the clock and saw that it was 7:45?

What the heck? "Oh, thank God that was only a dream," I said smiling. I joyfully jumped off my two-mattress bed and heard a big crunch and felt a jolt of pain in my foot. "Oh no, not again," I moaned.
