Fishing With My Family
By Heaven Potter
Genre: Non-fiction Level: Elementary K-3
Year: 2001 Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

My Dad has a commercial fishing boat, in Homer, Alaska. My brother, Mom, and I went to Homer to go for a day on the boat. I had to wake up very early in the morning. When we woke up it was very foggy. On the way to Homer, while my brother was asleep, my Mom and I kept company by counting moose. We found five of them.

My Dad and his crewmembers met us at the harbor and helped us carry supplies to the boat. As we left the harbor, the water was pretty blue, and the mountains were pretty green.

We set out the net and brought it back in. I called "jellyfish" every time one went by. We did not catch many fish in the morning, just a few pink salmon.

Then we saw an eagle in a tree and decided to throw him a fish. My Dad drove the boat closer to the shore. One of the crew guys threw a fish on the beach. The eagle in the tree just sat there, but another eagle swept down from nowhere and snatched up the fish! It was a little scary but exciting too!

After this we went back to fishing. The water got a little rough, and I got seasick. One of the crew took my Mom and I to the beach. When we got to the beach, I felt better right away. Mom and I collected pretty shells and starfish. Then we sat down and ate Triscuts and drank Pepsi, and imagined what would happen if we were stranded on an island.

After a while, my Dad and brother picked us up in the skiff and took us back to the big boat. Then we took our fish and sold them to the tender. The fish were weighed in a big basket held with chains. It was pretty neat!

That was the end of our day, and I got to drive the boat back to the Homer harbor.
