Lily's Lunch Adventure
By Lily Ann Jordan
Genre: Non-fiction Level: Elementary K-3
Year: 1996 Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

I got up, got dressed, ate breakfast and fed my animals. Then we started school. Today we were sitting at the kitchen counter and I was doing math. It was about 12 o'clock when Mom started lunch for my sister and me. She was making us alphabet soup. I like spelling words around the rim of the bowl.

My mom put chicken broth in the pan. Then she put only 12 little alphabet pastas in the pan with the chicken broth. It exploded! Broth was everywhere. The stove started making these loud clicking sounds.

My mom turned off the stove but it was still loudly clicking. She went over to the phone and called my dad. He said to turn on the stove -- maybe it would help to dry it out. So my mom did. We all sat down and did some more math.

Flames started shooting out of the stove. My mom called dad to find out if the stove would explode. My sister and I got our shoes on and then we went out to the entryway and waited. Mom saw more smoke so she stopped talking to dad and called 911.

That's when the real adventure started. We didn't expect two big, red fire trucks, lots of firemen or the really loud sirens! My sister and I opened the door for them. My mom was really embarrassed.

They came in and checked out the stove. The fireman lifted up the plate to the stove and it shot a flame towards him. They finished checking the stove out and then they complimented on the house. I guess they liked our kitchen a lot.

They told my sister and me what a good job we did getting our shoes on and waiting by the door and staying calm. Then the firemen started joking with me and my sister. They said that soup might be a little late today.

It's OK. We kind of wanted McDonald's anyway.
