St. Lawrence Island, off the western coast of Alaska, is home to this unique group with roots and extended family across the Bering Strait in Russia. Although "Yupik" is part of their name, their culture, history and language are not shared by the Yup'ik / Cup'ik people of southwestern Alaska. The Siberian Yupik people live in two major towns: Savoonga and Gambell. Seabirds nest on the rocky cliffs of St. Lawrence, and there are no trees on the island. Whale, seal, and walrus meat are a big part of the diet, and many men are expert boat-builders and seamen as well as hunters.
