Chapter 28

Chapter Summary:  Cutuk goes in search of Enuk one last time. He discovers a skull and Enuk's rifle. In the wolf den above Enuk's skull he finds a few gold nuggets. He leaves the gold to the porcupine that lives in the den.  He's found Enuk and he gets to tell him that he's missed him and that he didn't know how to be alone, but now he does and for once he's happy and content with who he is and what he is doing with his life.

Discussion Questions:

How does Cutuk know where to look for Enuk?

Points to Consider:

  • Perhaps this sense he has is linked with Iris's abilities or the gift that Abe also has (for example, Abe's painting of the wolf and the Twin Towers before 9/11).

What do you think happened to Enuk?

Points to Consider:

  • Cutuk finds Enuk's gun, skull, and a few nuggets of gold, but the mystery of how the old hunter died remains.

Why does Cutuk leave the gold?

Points to Consider:

  • He's become like Abe. He has no need for wealth, because he has the land and the animals, and hopefully Dawna. He knows that the gold won't bring him the happiness that he's already found.
