Chapter Summary: 
The wolves circle Cutuk, and from the pack leader's point of view, choose to lead the pack away from the "man" who carries the scent of a pup who lost his mother early in his life.

How does this short chapter fit into the story?

Points to Consider:

  • The wolves get to have thoughts and ideas of their own. The growing relationship with Cutuk and the animals is revealed, as well as the wolf's ability to sense human feelings and emotions.

Why does the wolf choose to leave the kill?

Points to Consider:

  • He senses danger and also seems to understand something about Cutuk's pain he carries over the loss of his mother.
