Warren's Important Thing
By Warren
Genre: Non-fiction Level: Elementary 4-6
Category: Student Examples

guinea pigAn important thing to me is my pet Sunny. She is a longhaired guinea pig. Sunny has an elliptical shaped body and is about nine inches long. Her body is covered with a combination of white, black, and orange-gold. The importance is not so much the animal as the memory that comes with her.

When I was in third grade, I was in a combo class, meaning that there were third and fourth graders in my class. That year I had Ms. Barney as a teacher. She became my favorite teacher that I ever had, and she had the best class pet, Sunny.

Over the weekends, Sunny had to be cared for. Kids volunteered to take her home. I offered to take Sunny home often, and the year practically slipped by. I probably took her home the most and was asked to take Sunny home over the summer. When asked, I said, "Yes!"

I asked my parents, and they agreed to having Sunny over the summer. My teacher planned to keep the same class and come back next year with a fourth and fifth grade combo. Except then she got a different job and had a child. She called my parents and asked them if they would keep Sunny. That's how I got her.
