Andrea's Important Thing
By Andrea
Genre: Non-fiction Level: Elementary 4-6
Category: Student Examples

snow globeWhen asked what my most prized possession was, I just couldn't decide. So, to make it easier, I imagined that one night I woke up and my house was on fire. I would only have time enough to take one thing and get out of my burning home just in time to save my life.

This is what I chose: On the Christmas when I was seven years old, my grandmother gave me a beautiful hand-painted snow globe set in porcelain. In the middle of the glass orb, there is a swan that sits nestled on a bed of pink and purple flowers. Around its neck and the porcelain base is a wreath of red, pink, and purple flowers flowing in and out of green leaves. It also plays music. I don't know the name of the song it plays, but when I listen to it, it makes me happy and reminds me of my grandma and my dad.

So, if I had but one minute to save one thing from my house, this is what I would take, for it reminds me of my family and makes me feel happy.
