Samantha's Important Thing
By Samantha
Genre: Non-fiction Level: Elementary 4-6
Category: Student Examples

Samantha?s fluteLast summer my cousin, Kimberly, was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor. In July, my mom, my sister and I traveled to Seattle to visit her. When we arrived at her house, we went in and started talking to her. She asked me a lot of questions, like what grade I was in. I told her 6th, and she told me that she had started band in 6th grade. She asked me what instrument I played, but since I didn't have an instrument, I told her that I was hoping I could play the flute. Kim had to think for a minute, but she remembered that the flute she played through junior high and high school was somewhere in her linen closet. The flute was covered in an old and tattered brown covering and probably anyone but me wouldn't love to play it. I guess Kim looked in my eyes and knew what I was thinking, because she asked me if I wanted to play and keep her flute. To this day I play her flute and remember her kindness.
