The Great Hunter
By Taylor Smith
Genre: Visual Arts Level: Elementary 4-6
Category: Student Examples

Taylor Smith's maskOne day a young Yupik boy named Sasuke went into the tundra with a few harpoons to hunt. Sasuke came from a starving Yupik village about 80 miles away in the Brooks Range.

About ten miles into the tundra Sasuke spotted a male caribou. Sasuke threw a harpoon but he forgot to aim and missed! The caribou charged at Sasuke and scared him badly. Then the caribou reeled up and broke one of Sasuke's legs. Sasuke cried out in pain. He threw another harpoon in rage, which hit the caribou in the neck, killing it.

Limping back to the village with the caribou, Sasuke returned and was honored as a great hunter.

The End
