Totem at Howkan

This Eagle totem stood at Howkan for decades. Howkan, like several other villages in the region, was no longer occupied when the CCC workers arrived in the late 1930s to collect or perhaps copy the original poles. During the early 1900s, many Native Alaskan families moved to larger communities as they sought work and education for their children. Alaska State Library.
