Ready to embark on a cross-country tour promoting Alaska statehood

ASL-AlaskaStatehood-9
In 1958, ready to embark on a cross-country tour promoting Alaska statehood, the territory’s elected representatives pause for a photo. From left, Senator-elect Ernest Gruening, Representative-elect Ralph Rivers, and Senator-elect William Egan. With the men are Mrs. Rivers, left, and Neva Egan. They averaged 300 miles a day on the drive from Fairbanks in -60° F temperatures using only snow tires (without chains) to cross mountain passes. Alaska State Library
