The SS Northwestern

UAF-1970-11-18
The SS Northwestern, like the SS Sacketts Harbor, was a ship that served in the United States Marines during World War II. Pictured is the SS Northwestern after it had been hit when the Japanese attacked Dutch Harbor. Written on the reverse of the picture is: "The battered SS Northwestern continued to smoke long after the [Japanese] raiders left Dutch Harbor. The superstructure and buckled plate give evidence of the intense heat from fire which followed bomb hits during the attack which took place June 3 and 4." Archives, University of Alaska Fairbanks.
