The steamer SS Princess May was part of the Canadian Pacific Railway Company fleet. On August 5, 1910, the ship hit a reef close to Sentinel Island in Alaska. Shortly afterward, the tide went out, and with it, her chance of being removed. The crew, passengers, and freight were removed, and the ship remained on the reef for nearly a month before tugboats were able to pull her off. This image of the SS Princess May was taken by W.H. Case and became famous throughout Alaska and the United States. While the ship was being removed from the reef, she received a 50-foot-long, 18-inch-wide gash. Fortunately, the damage was repaired and she served for the Canadian Pacific Railway Company for nine more years before being sold for use in the Caribbean.
