The cost to build the Alaska Railroad Hotel in Mount McKinley National Park was only $350,000, a modest sum for its time, because the railroad hauled the building materials to the site for free and the Alaska Steamship Company agreed to reduce its shipping costs of materials from the Lower 48 by 35 percent. Construction of the hotel began in 1937 and was finished in time to accommodate the tourists for the 1939 season. Pictured is the hotel under construction in September 1938.
