In 1906-07, conservationist and naturalist Charles Sheldon, with guide Harry Karstens, visited the Mount McKinley area to study its wildlife. Prior to their travels, the area was known for the excellent hunting and mining opportunities it offered. In 1908, Sheldon returned home and to his position as chairman of the Boone and Crockett Club's Game Committee. With the club's backing, he started a campaign to make the area a national park, where the wildlife, such as the moose pictured here, would be protected from hunting and mining activity. In February 1917, Mount McKinley National Park was established and Karstens became the park's first superintendent. Anchorage Museum of History and Art, Library and Archives.
