John Treadwell opened the Alaska Mill & Mining Company

In May 1882, John Treadwell opened the Alaska Mill & Mining Company, which became known as the Treadwell Gold Mines. The mine would produce more than $60 million in gold before it closed in 1917. Alaska State Library.
