After 40 years in Seattle's Pioneer Square, the pole was burned

Negative No.: NA3834

After nearly 40 years of standing in Seattle's Pioneer Square, the Raven pole was burned by an arsonist in 1938. The city sent the pole to Saxman, where Tlingit carver Charles Brown and his crew made a replica and sent the new pole south in April 1940. C.M. Archbold photographed the top half of the damaged pole on the ground in Saxman, just outside of Ketchikan, Alaska. Copyright University of Washington.
