Images of houses and totem poles at Tongass Village

ASL-TongassVillage-2

This image of the houses and totem poles at Tongass Village, ca. 1888-89, includes the famed Raven pole at far right. In 1899 alone, Tongass Village lost perhaps 17 poles to members of the Harriman Expedition, and another to the "P-I Excursion." Note the third totem pole from right, named the Proud Raven Pole, and commonly known as the Lincoln Pole. Photo by N.B. Miller, U.S. Bureau of Fisheries. Alaska State Library.
