Vitus Bering

Portrait traditionally identified as Vitus Jonassen Bering. This identification is questioned, following the discovery in 1991 of Bering's remains and the forensic reconstruction of his facial features. Portrait is possibly Vitus Pedersen Bering, uncle to Bering's mother, poet, and royal historian. Alaska State Library - Historical Collections.
