Return to: Alaska's Steese Highway - Recognizing Alaska's need for improved transportation infrastructure, in 1905 the federal government created the Alaska Road Commission.
Opened in 1927, the Steese Highway was also known as the Fairbanks-Circle Military Highway, as the Alaska Road Commission fell under the jurisdiction of the U.S. War Department. Alaska State Library.
