Valdez Dike

In 1905, Col. Wilds P. Richardson, president of the Alaska Road Commission, wrote the Secretary of the Army urging him to station a company of engineer troops at Valdez to work on the Fairbanks-Valdez Trail. Here, members of the Alaska Road Commission were photographed on Valdez Dike. They include Col. W.P. Richardson with Lt. L.A. Kunzig and Lt. L.E. Edgerton. In later years, both Richardson and Edgerton would have highways named for them. Archives, University of Alaska Fairbanks.
