Great ceremony

Two sections of the WAMCATS cable were spliced aboard the Burnside amid great ceremony on August 24, 1904. In the P.S. Hunt image, the army transport ship was situated about ten miles from Seattle and on a return trip from Alaska waters. A clipping with the image states, "The Pacific Coast Steamship Company generously placed the SS Umatilla at the disposal of the ceremony committee, carrying 1,000 guests to witness the occasion. This was without charge of any kind." Alaska State Library.
