The Cage of Dogs
By Caitlyn Greenleaf
Genre: Poetry Level: Junior 7-9
Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

An infinite number

Of words

A copious movement of jaws

Countless formings of lips

Needed

Needless

Healing

Impairing

The Needless words

Understand

They are

Needless

Yet the Needed words

Don't know

They Touched

They Healed

Don't know they were

Needed

The covertly hurting souls

Are drawn

To Healing

To Stimulation

They need a safe place

Where the beasts are kept at bay

The Needless words

Aren't always Purposeless

They have a hidden objective

An evil purpose

They aim and fire at Soul

They tear at Being with their sharp teeth

Corrupt Living with their wicked howl

They mutilate far worse than a thousand bullets

Than a million bombs

Than a trillion arrows

The bearer of these words

Doesn't always see that he broke the chains

That held the dogs at bay

He appears blameless

But his mouth bears the fruits

Of a careless action

The reckless messenger

Didn't think of the message he brought

Before it was too late

Before the latch was lifted

And the dogs let out
