Daisies Grow
By Juliane Smith
Genre: Poetry Level: High School 10-12
Year: 2003 Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

Through cracks in pavement
In sunshine dappled
By leaves of caged trees
Unfurling
To the harsh gleam of streetlights
Blooming to the blink
Of neon signs

Daisies grow
Through cracks in pavement
In the aroma of rye bread
Fresh tangy fruit
Unfolding
Near the stench of a dumpster
Blossoming to the spice
Of burnt Mexican food

Daisies grow
Through cracks in pavement
In air alive
With the thud of a boom box
Pushing upwards
Through blended voices
And the double beat of hands and feet

Daisies grow
Through cracks in pavement
Roots snaking
Under sidewalk
Curling
In a desperate claw
Grabbing hold
Of what little there is
