Alaska
By Rosika Nees
Genre: Poetry Level: Elementary 4-6
Year: 2002 Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

Colors fly with a single northern light,

A wolf's howl echoes thin in the dead of night.

Swans swim in a crystal clear lake so delicate so pure,

An Eskimo fishes with a shimmering sparkling lure.

Salmon leap into the clean Alaskan air,

A polar bear lumbers slowly by without a care.

Seals dance more gracefully than ballerinas today,

The seagulls that rule the ocean shore have much to say.

Stars come out and glow in the sky,

In the morning light the clouds breath out a sigh.

A pale red hermit crab walks in the sun-kissed sand,

Hulking mountains form this beautiful land.

A little girl stands brave and alone,

For she knows that Alaska is truly her home.
