Climbing
By Matthew N.K. Smith
Genre: Poetry Level: Elementary K-3
Year: 1997 Category: UAA/ADN Creative Writing Contest

I like being silent,
and climbing,
climbing.
I choose the hardest ways.
I won't let anyone stop me
From getting to the top.
At the first peak, Baldy,
You can see the city.
Black Tail Rocks,
You're in the clouds,
and all along the ridge...
Until, finally, at Round Top,
you're above the clouds,
My name is in the canister
in the cairn
at the top of Round Top.
